On Sunday, July 8, 2001 strong thunderstorms brought about a massive flood that affected nearly the entire Free State of McDowell. Several hundred homes & businesses were destroyed as a result of this wrath of nature. Currently several organizations are working to rebuild what was damaged & destroyed. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is working diligently with citizens to help assess their damages and get their claims filed and acted on in a time courteous manner. Anyone who experienced any kind of damages from the flood is encouraged to call the FEMA hotline at 1-800-462-9029 and file a report. The FEMA helpline number is 1-800-525-0321, use this to get assistance with filling out forms, or for general questions about the program.
